Wedding First Looks!

More wedding photos today!  I left off last post with our getting ready photos and some bridal portraits (and groom portraits), so check that out here if you haven't already: Getting Ready Wedding Photos.

Matt and I decided to go the non-traditional route, and have a First Look prior to walking down the aisle. I am SO happy that we decided to do this for a few reasons--first of all, we got to take pictures at the Jefferson Memorial downtown which was the perfect D.C. backdrop. Secondly, we were able to get group photos, family photos, and bride/groom shots--aka basically everything, completely finished before our ceremony even began. This allowed everyone to really enjoy our cocktail hour--especially Matt and me! Therefore, we were able to mingle with our guests for an additional hour on an otherwise very busy day! Thirdly, I was kind of stressed about photos, and I'm glad we had a few hours prior to the ceremony to take them while my hair & makeup were still relatively fresh, and before I had to worry about missing out on parts of our reception! Also, seeing Matt for the first time with just him and me (and our photographers) was one of the most special parts of our whole day; it truly was so memorable to just grab that moment, and it took away so much of my anxiety!  Finally, our photographers let us know in advance that couples that decide to do a First Look, get 50% more photos...so that sealed the deal! I would highly recommend a First Look!

My bridesmaids, my mom, my MIL, and me finished getting our hair & makeup done by about 1:30pm, so I was zipped into my dress by 1:45pm, and my veil was fastened....then I headed with my photographers and bridal party down to the BEAUTIFUL lobby of the Willard Continental hotel, where I met my Dad for our first look (prior to meeting Matt)...these photographs will forever be some of my most cherished memories:

After seeing my Dad for the first time in my wedding own, I finally was able to meet my groom!!! Our bridal party stayed in the air conditioned lobby, while I went with our photographers to meet up with Matt just outside the lobby...his back was turned to me at first....

Just before he turned around...

Getting Ready In the Bridal Suite!

Our wedding day was the most perfect day, and it was the best day of our lives! We were married in my hometown of Arlington, Virginia on August 20th in a fun neighborhood called Clarendon. I didn't struggle with finding a location for us to get married--in fact, I only called one venue for their availability. I have always loved this venue for it's art deco design, the beautiful wooden floors, the long beautiful bar (black & gold) & high gold-gilded ceilings. Also, it is a venue known for it's amazing food (the chef did not disappoint!)--which was super important to us! We also love how centrally located the venue is (it was also 1/2 a block from a metro station and about 15 minutes from the airport, so it was super convenient for all of our guests, both local & out-of-towners).

Our guests stayed at The Willard Intercontinental hotel, and the JW Marriott D.C. downtown, and while our Friday night rehearsal dinner & welcome party were at venues downtown, we had our wedding just over the bridge in Arlington. Our ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception all took place inside the same venue. We were supposed to use the rooftop bar for our cocktail hour, but it was just TOO HOT--and the inside bar is absolutely gorgeous, so we just went ahead and decided to stay inside in the A/C, and i think everyone was probably happier because of it. That was the only thing from the entire day that I wish we could have changed--everything else was awesome!

I'll share some photos from getting ready at the Willard Intercontinental first :-)

My beautiful bridesmaids wore blush pink dressed by J.Crew, and light gold shoes by B.P.. In the bridal suite at the Willard, they enjoyed hair styling by Behind The Veil! My hair & makeup is also by them :-). For getting ready, I got them matching blue-striped PJ's from Victoria's Secret, and I also bought them monogrammed makeup bags. For my mom and my MIL, we bough them monogrammed navy-blue plush robes (from Pottery Barn online), to get ready in.  I got ready in the most beautiful lace-backed robe, purchased at Bloomingdales (it's called the Flora Nikrooz Showstopper Wrap Robe---for sizing, I'm in a Small--the arms are a bit big, but the XS was too short for me--I'm 5'7" for reference).

My dress is the "Rowan" gown by Amsale in Ivory. I custom purchased this from Hitched bridal salon in Georgetown--I love the girls there, they took such great care of me! I also bought my waltz-length, pencil-trim veil from Hitched, but I can't recall the maker. My pink, beaded shoes were pretty uncomfortable, but they were by Badgley Mischka, and photographed well hah! I changed into blue wedges for the reception! I wore bubble bash by OPI Gel on my nails--which is truly the perfect light pink!

I didn't wear very many accessories--just my oval-cut engagement ring, and dainty tear drop earrings. I think a lot of brides over-accessorize--to each their own, but I wanted to look classic--and my dress made a statement despite being simple!

Bridal portraits were so awkward--I didn't really know how to smile? hah

The boys got ready next door at a suite in the JW Marriott D.C....not quite as many getting ready photos from their front...but my groom looked incredibly handsome in his tux (and accessories + tuxedo shoes) by Hugo Boss :-)
